Find the gunpowder!
A Bonfire night speaking game to revise prepositions of place.
Author: Wayne Rimmer
To revise prepositions of place through playing a speaking game
1 copy of Bonfire night 2 worksheet per student
in, on, under, near, over, next to, on the left of, on the right of, barrel, bed, fireplace, box, desk, cupboard, bookcase, wardrobe
- The game is a variation of the popular game Battleships, but here instead of looking for ships, the students look for gunpowder.
- Before playing the game, revise prepositions of place and pre-teach ‘barrel’.
- Demonstrate the game by drawing the grid on the board. Keep a copy of the grid in your hand and draw in 5 pieces of gunpowder without showing the students. Ask volunteers to guess where your pieces of gunpowder are by calling out the coordinates, for example, Is it on the cupboard? or Is it near the bookcase? etc.
- Give out photocopies of Bonfire night 2 worksheet. The students then play in pairs, taking it in turns to guess the location of the gunpowder on their friend’s grid. The first to locate all five pieces has discovered the gunpowder plot and wins!
